Remote Log-in

Let's say you're preparing a huge Cheap Rosetta Stone
PowerPoint presentation for a big meeting on Friday. All of the PowerPoint files and PDFs and images that you want to use in your presentation are saved on the hard drive of your work computer. Thursday rolls around and you wake up with a nasty stomach virus. You don't feel well enough to go to the office, but you need to finish that presentation. Here's where remote login can help. ? Photographer: Franz Pflueg | Agency: DreamstimeRemote log-in capability allows users to access files such as sales presentations. Until recently, virtual private networks (VPN) were the only way to remotely access work files from home. But VPN access isn't the same as accessing the hard drive of your work computer. VPN gives you access to the local area network (LAN) at your office. With VPN, you're only able to access your PowerPoint presentation files if you've saved them on the network, not just on your computer's hard drive. Remote login, however, uses simple desktop sharing software to give you a remote control for accessing your computer -- and all of its software and hard drive files -- from any Internet-connected device anywhere in the world. Remote login works exactly the same way as desktop sharing. In desktop sharing, there are two separate parties: the host computer and the remote user. To share a desktop, the host computer allows a remote user to view the contents of the host computer's desktop over the Internet. The host computer can also hand over keyboard and mouse controls to the remote user. With remote log-in, your home or work computer is the host and you (in this case) are the remote user. Remote login requires three basic components: Software download Internet connection Secure desktop sharing network [source: GoToMyPC] For remote login to work, both the host computer and all remote users have to download and install the same desktop sharing software. Desktop sharing software typically includes two distinct programs: Cheap Rosetta Stone Software
The desktop sharing client that runs on the host computer A viewer program that allows the remote user to view the contents of the host computer's desktop in a resizable window [source: GoToMyPC] Remote login will only work if the host computer is powered on, connected to the Internet and running the desktop sharing software. Each time you open and run the desktop sharing software on the host computer, the software starts a new session. Each session has a particular ID and/or password that's required to remotely log in to the host computer. Once the session has been established, most desktop sharing software quietly runs in the background of the host computer until a remote login request is made.- To log in to the host computer from home (or while traveling), you'll need to run your version of the same desktop sharing software and enter in the correct session ID or password. Or some services allow you to log in through a Web site. Once you're logged in, both computers will communicate with each other over a secure desktop sharing network. Access to this network can be free or subscription-based, depending on the service. While connected, you'll have access to keyboard controls, mouse controls, all software and all files on the host machine. For security purposes, all packets of information that are sent over the network are typically encrypted on each end with secure shell (SSH) or 128-bit advanced encryption standard (AES) encoding. For added security, no Cheap Rosetta Stone French
session IDs or passwords are stored on desktop sharing servers; they're automatically generated by the host machine. Now let's look at real-time collaboration through desktop sharing.

Farsi Pimsleur Teaching Method

Farsi (also known as Persian) is the language primarily spoken in Cheap Rosetta Stone
Iran and Afghanistan. The Pimsleur Language Learning System is a method of language teaching for individuals who are interested in learning a new language quickly. This method was created by Dr. Paul Pimsleur, a language educator for more than 20 years. 2,500 WordsStudies have shown that native speakers in every country use approximately 2,500 words and phrases daily. Dr. Pimsleur's philosophy is that once these language building blocks have been learned, a student can begin speaking Farsi quickly. He believed that it was more important to learn these words which are used most often than to learn a large quantity of words and phrases.Building Rosetta Stone Chinese
BlocksEach lesson in the Pimsleur method builds on the next. As a student masters a lesson, a foundation is created for the following lesson. There are no repetitive drills and grammar lessons. Through exposure, practice and interaction with the course, the student begins to recognize and distinguish correct language usage from incorrect usage.Language ImmersionThe Pimsleur Farsi course operates on the effectiveness of immersion in the language. Exposure to Farsi conversation works by allowing the student to learn and understand the structure and syntax of the language. Once these concepts are grasped, the student can begin to recognize words and phrases.Audio CDsThe Pimsleur method is taught using audio CDs, which are interactive and provide the convenience and flexibility of learning Farsi anywhere. Rosetta Stone Software
Each lesson is 30 minutes long and teaches vocabulary and grammar using immersion in Farsi conversation.

Learning Chinese for Beginners

Studying Chinese has become very popular over the past 20 years. Rosetta Stone V3
With business and cultural links to China and other Chinese-speaking countries increasing, interest in learning Chinese for business and personal reasons means there are many ways to go about learning Chinese. TutorsHiring a native Chinese speaker or someone who has lived in a Chinese-speaking culture for a long time is a good way to begin learning Chinese. Chinese, like other Asian languages, is a tonal language. Getting the tones right is critical to understanding and communication. For example, with a slight change of inflection in Chinese you could end up calling your mother a horse. Many large cities have Chinese tutors. Consulting a local college or university foreign language department may prove fruitful. If you can, find a tutor who has experience teaching. If your tutor doesn't have much experience, use a book and tape system that is well structured. In some cases, tutors can help with pronunciation online via voice messaging or telephone.ClassesGroup classes are another good option. By starting to study Chinese in a group setting with a native speaker, corrections in grammar and pronunciation are easily made. In some ways, group classes are better than tutors. You are able to do language modeling with other students, and the interactions can help with understanding and retention. The downside of a class situation is less individual time with the teacher. Some community colleges offer Chinese classes. In some cities, civic organizations and continuing education services offer Chinese classes. If you want a Chinese class, but can only find a tutor, consider getting some of your friends together for a class with the tutor.Computer Based TrainingA number of good computer-based training systems are available, including Rosetta stone. Many of these training systems have voice recognition software to correct grammar and pronunciation. However, they are not perfect and cannot correct minor problems with inflection. In situations where you can't find a tutor or a class, computer-based training may be a good option. It is also a Cheap Rosetta Stone Software
good supplement to tutors or classes.Traditional Books and TapesIf none of the above are available, traditional books and tapes can work. The problem with books and tapes is that teaching proper intonation of the words is very difficult. If you are working primarily from a book and tape, it is best if you can arrange for an occasional hour of tutorial, either online or by telephone.Things to Watch Out ForSpoken Chinese is a very simple language in many ways. For example, there are no verb tenses. An action's placement in time is indicated with a time word somewhere in the sentence. Chinese grammatical structure can be either subject-verb-object or subject-object-verb, which can be difficult for native English speakers. Most important, however, is to master the tones early. Re-learning an incorrect tone can be very difficult.Another important thing to consider if learning to read and write is the character system. Mainland China uses a simplified character system, while most other Chinese speaking areas use traditional characters. The two writing systems are mutually exclusive and can not be combined.Language PracticeOnce you have a rudimentary working knowledge of Chinese, try to use it. As you meet people from Asia, see if they speak Mandarin (or Cantonese, Rosetta Stone Arabic V3
if you are studying Cantonese). People are often very happy to help with a bit of practice and language instruction.

Language Learning - How Do Children Learn Language?

Language learning is natural. Babies are born with the ability to learn it and that Rosetta Stone language
learning begins at birth. All children, no matter what language their parents speak, learn language much the same way. This learning takes place in three basic stages.Basic Stages of Language LearningStage One Learning SoundsWhen babies are born, they can make and hear all the sounds in all the languages in the world. That’s about 150 sounds in about 6500 languages! However, no language uses all 150 sounds. The sounds a language uses are called phonemes and English has about 44. Some languages use more and some use fewer. In this stage, babies learn which phonemes belong to the language they are learning and which don’t. The ability to recognize and produce those sounds is called phonemic awareness, which is important for children learning to read.Stage Two Learning WordsAt this stage children essentially learn how the sounds in a language go together to make meaning. For example, they learn that the sounds m, ah, m, and ee refer to that being that cuddles and feeds them mommy. That’s a significant step because everything we say is really just a stream of sounds. To make sense of those sounds, a child must be able to recognize where one word ends and another one begins. These are called word boundaries. It’s not exactly words, though, that children are learning. What children are actually learning Cheap Rosetta Stone V3
are morphemes, which may or may not be words. That’s really not as confusing as it sounds. A morpheme is just a sound or sounds that have a meaning, like the word mommy. The word mommies, however, has two morphemes: mommy ands. Children at this stage can recognize that the s means "more than one" and will know that when that sound is added to other words, it means the same thing "more than one."Stage Three Learning SentencesDuring this stage, children learn how to create sentences. That means they can put words in the correct order. For example, they learn that in English we say "I want a cookie" and "I want a chocolate cookie," not "Want I a cookie" or "I want cookie chocolate."Children also learn the difference between grammatical correctness and meaning. Noam Chomsky created an example of this difference in the sentence Colorless green ideas sleep furiously. Children will know that although the sentence is grammatically correct, it doesn’t make sense. They know that green is a color and can't, therefore, be colorless!Language DevelopmentLanguage develops at different rates in different children, but most children follow this pattern:BirthWhen babies are born, they can already respond to the rhythm of language. They can recognize stress, pace, and the rise and fall of pitch.Six MonthsAs early as four months, infants can distinguish between language sounds and other noise, like the difference between a spoken word and a clap. By six months, babies have begun to babble and coo and that is the first sign that the baby is learning language. Babies are now capable of making all the sounds in all the languages of the world, but by the time they are a year old, they will have dropped the sounds that aren’t part of the language they are learning.Eight MonthsBabies can now recognize groups of sounds and can distinguish one group of sounds from another. They can tell where one group ends and another begins. That is word boundary recognition. Although they recognize these sound groups as words, they may not know what the words mean.Twelve MonthsAt this point, children are able to attach meanings to words, and once they can do that, they can begin to build a vocabulary. They begin to mimic new words they hear and by the time they are twelve months old will have a vocabulary of around fifty words.Eighteen MonthsIn order to communicate, children must know how to use the words they are learning. In this stage of language development, children are able to recognize the difference between nouns and verbs. Generally, the first Rosetta Stone English V3
words in a child’s vocabulary are nouns.Twenty-Four MonthsAt this stage children have begun to recognize more than nouns and verbs and understand basic sentence structure. They can use pronouns, for example, and know the right order of words in a sentence and can create simple sentences like "Me cookie?" (which means "May I have a cookie?")Thirty to Thirty-Six MonthsBy this age, about 90% of what children say is grammatically correct. The mistakes they make are usually mistakes like adding -ed to irregular verbs to form the past tense. For example, they might say "I falled down" instead of "I fell down." They have learned the grammatical rule to form the past tense by adding -ed to a verb, but have not yet learned the exceptions to the rule.Further Language Development and Gifted ChildrenChildren continue to expand their vocabulary and develop more complex language. Their language use really doesn’t completely resemble adult language until they reach around age eleven. That’s when children are able to use what are called although-type sentences. Those are sentences that show a concession: Even though the man was tired, he kept working. Young children would be likely to say The man was tired, but he kept working. Verbally gifted children often go through these stages more quickly than other children. Some go through the stages so quickly that they seem to skip right over some of them. It is not unusual for a gifted child to babble and coo and then be relatively silent. By age one they are not mimicking words and by age two they are not using even simple sentences. They may be saying "ma-ma" and "da-da," and a few other words, but not much more. Then suddenly, at 26 months, the child begins speaking in complete, grammatically correct sentences like a three-year-old. Other verbally gifted kids may be using sentences like Me cookie at age one. And some six-year-old gifted kids are using sentences like I still love my Grammy even though she doesn’t know how to use the computer. The advanced language development of gifted kids may be one of the reasons that some of them are able to learn how to read before they turn five or even before they turn three.

Another pencil grip which suggests fine motor dyspraxia is one in which the child holds the pencil very tightly

Yet another component of motor control for legible handwriting produced Rosetta Stone Spanish
at an acceptable rate is feedback of the sensorimotor system, especially kinesthetic feedback, during the performance of motor actions. Luria (1966) points out that for effective motor action, there must be afferent impulses from the body to the brain that inform the brain about the location and movement of the body. The body then makes adjustments based on these impulses to alter its movement pattern until the desired pattern is achieved. Thus, it is kinesthetic feedback that facilitates a good match between the motor plan and motor execution. In writing, the writer has a kinesthetic plan in mind and compares this plan to the kinesthetic feedback and then either corrects, persists or terminates the graphomotor pattern (Levine, 1987). Visual-Motor Coordination. Visual-motor coordination is the ability to match motor output with visual input. Although it is the nonvisual or kinesthetic feedback that is crucial for handwriting, visual feedback is also important. Visual feedback provides gross monitoring of writing rather than the fine-tuned monitoring provided by nonvisual feedback. It is this gross monitoring that prevents us from writing on the desk, crossing over lines (Levine, 1987) and staying within the margins. PROBLEMS WITH GRAPHOMOTOR SKILLS Deficits in Visual-Perceptual Skills. Children with visual-perceptual problems may have a history of reading problems because of difficulty with letter and word recognition. In addition, if a child cannot accurately visually discriminate the letter b from the letter d, he/she will be unable to reliably reproduce these letters upon demand. If students have problems with visual closure, they may have difficulty with accurate letter formation and handwriting legibility may be poor. For example, they may print the letter o with a space in the top, but perceive the letter as closed. When deficits in visual-perceptual skills are suspected, they can be readily identified by informal or standardized tests. Deficits in Orthographic Coding. Students who have trouble with orthographic coding will often forget how to form certain letters in the middle of a writing task. They frequently retrace letters or exhibit false starts or hesitancies as they write. Observations of their written output may show that they have formed the same letter several different ways. When asked, these students can usually report if they have difficulty remembering what letters look like. Children who cannot reliably make use of visual recall to form letters and words often prefer to print rather than write in cursive because print involves only twenty-six different visual letter patterns, whereas letters written in cursive have a seemingly endless number of visual patterns. Their spelling errors may be phonetic in nature (Levine, 1987, 1994). Deficits in Motor Planning and Execution. Poor motor Rosetta Stone Spanish
planning and execution is referred to as dyspraxia. Deuel and Doar (1992) define dyspraxia as the inability to learn or perform serial voluntary movements with the proficiency expected for age and/or verbal intelligence (pg. 100). Helmer and Myklebust (1965) discuss the role that memory for motor sequences play in correctly forming letters when writing. Luria (1966) described two forms of dyspraxia. The first form involves difficulty in creating an image of a required motor movement. The second involves a breakdown in the central nervous system mechanism that is responsible for putting the plan into action. Thus, the child has the blueprint for the action/behavior, but has difficulty implementing it motorically (Levine, 1987). Ayres (1972, 1975, 1985) suggested that the problem in developmental dyspraxia is in the neural activity that takes place prior to motor execution. According to Ayres, dyspraxia is generally viewed as an output problem because the motor component is more observable than the sensory component. However, in her view, dyspraxia is an inability to integrate sensory and motor information, rather than merely motor production. Children who suffer from fine motor dyspraxia show poor motor coordination. At times, they assign too many muscles to stabilizing the pencil or pen and too few muscles to mobilizing it. At other times, they assign too many muscles to mobilizing the writing utensil and too few muscles to stabilizing it. Thus, their pencil grips are often inefficient. They may develop a hooked grip in which they stretch out the tendons in the back of the arm so that the fingers move very little if at all during writing. With this grip, they are using the larger muscles of the wrist and forearm which may be easier to control than the smaller muscles in the fingers. They often perform poorly with other fine motor tasks that involve coordinated motor movements such as tying shoes or holding a fork correctly (Levine, 1987). Another pencil grip which suggests fine motor dyspraxia is one in which the child holds the pencil very tightly and near the point when writing. Further, students with dyspraxia often change pencil grips and prefer writing in cursive rather than print. They do not like to write and complain that their hand hurts when they write. Writing for them is a labor-intensive task. Fine motor dyspraxia is frequently associated with speech production problems because these children often have difficulty assigning the muscles in the mouth to specific speech sounds (Levine, 1987, 1994). Impaired Kinesthetic Feedback. Children with impaired kinesthetic feedback often develop a fist-like grip of the writing instrument. With this grip, they extend their thumb over the index and middle finger, limiting the mobility of the fingers. They may also press very hard on the paper with the writing utensil in an attempt to compensate for the lack of kinesthetic feedback. Further, they may look closely at the pencil or pen when writing thus attempting to guide the hand using visual feedback which is a much slower process. This is why children with impaired kinesthetic feedback may produce legible handwriting at a greatly reduced pace. As they progress in school, however, the demands placed on written output are too great and legibility deteriorates. These are the children who are often accused of writing neatly when they want to . They also often prefer to use mechanical pencils and scratchy pens because these provide more friction on the paper when writing. They complain that their hand hurts when writing and they do not like to write. Performance in other fine motor skills may be adequate or good because many fine motor skills do not place such reliance on Rosetta Stone French V3
kinesthetic feedback. Research has shown that tasks which were designed to improve kinesthetic sensitivity improved handwriting performance more than a task that involved only practice in handwriting (Harris and Livesay, 1991). Deficits in Visual-Motor Coordination. Children with visual-motor incoordination function much differently than those with impaired kinesthetic feedback because of the different demands of certain motor tasks. Poor visual-motor integration may lead to problems with fine motor tasks that rely heavily on visual feedback. These include threading a needle, drawing, painting, craftwork, building things with blocks, repairing things, playing games such as Nintendo and using a mouse on a computer.

About SQL

Structured Query Language (SQL) is a database computer language Rosetta Stone language
used to query, retrieve and manipulate data. Pronounced commonly as "sequel" and sometimes "S-Q-L," it is an important tool in managing relational databases called RDBMS (Relational Database Management Systems). Read on for a brief history of SQL that summarizes its importance and potential for future enhancements as it continues to be a dominating database management tool in the computer industry. HistoryIn the early 1970s, Donald D. Chamberlain and Raymond F. Boyce from IBM developed the first version of SQL. They called the first version as SEQUEL and designed it to query, retrieve and manipulate data stored in System R. System R was IBM's original relational database product. In 1985, IBM patented SQL; and then the following year (1986) the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Standards Organization (ISO) formally standardized it. Subsequent standardizations expanded in 1989, 1992 and 1999. SQL is a key requirement for large government computer contracts after becoming a U.S. Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS).FunctionSQL functions as an interactive query language and provides a tool for ad-hoc database queries. Users can Cheap Rosetta Stone V3
retrieve and display data on the screen by typing commands using SQL. As a database programming language, SQL helps programmers embed SQL commands into their application programs in order to access data in a database. As a database administration language, SQL can help define the database structure and control access to the stored data. SQL is also a client/server language, allowing computer programs to communicate over a network with databases servers that store and share data. As an Internet data access language, SQL provides a language for accessing corporate databases in an environment where Internet web servers interact with corporate data and application servers.SQL is also a distributed database language, whereby it helps to distribute data across many connected systems. Each computer system uses DBMS (Database Management Systems) software to communicate with each other to send requests for access to data. Some network may use a mix of different DBMS products where SQL often acts as a database gateway language, allowing one brand of DBMS to communicate with another brand of DBMS..MisconceptionsOne of the common misconceptions about SQL is that it only works as a query tool, as its name suggests; however, SQL can do much more than just query. SQL provides data retrieval, data manipulation, access control, data sharing and data integrity. Another common misconception is that SQL is a complete computer language just like COBOL, C, C++ or Java. SQL is actually a database sub-language consisting of 40 statements that specialize in database management tasks. By embedding these SQL statements into a computer programming language such as COBOL, C or C++, the statements can extend the language and use it for database access.FeaturesSome of the major features of SQL are vendor independence, portability across computer systems, SQL standards, database relational foundation and English-like structure, interactive queries, programmatic database access, multiple views of data, complete database language, dynamic data definition, client/server architecture, enterprise application support, extensibility and object technology, Internet database access, Java integration (JDBC) and industry infrastructure. SQL also features IBM endorsement and Rosetta Stone English V3
commitment (DB2), as well as Microsoft commitment (SQL Server, ODBC and ADO).PotentialSince becoming the standard database language, SQL and SQL-based relational databases are one of the most important foundation technologies used for single and multi-user environments in today's computer market. SQL started dominating the market ever since its first commercial implementation. Companies, such as IBM, Microsoft and other DBMS vendors, continue to embrace and back SQL as it continues to be a dominant standard for enterprise-class data management. Its portability and scalability make SQL more accessible to personal computers, including hand-held devices and microcomputers. SQL continues to be the standard database technology for Internet-based computing. Continued enhancement will only make SQL a stronger presence in the industry as one of the most important tools for database management.

Reading Comprehension Intervention for ELL

There are 5 Big Ideas in beginning reading:Phonemic Rosetta Stone Language
Awareness: The ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words. Alphabetic Principle: The ability to associate sounds with letters and use these sounds to form words. Fluency with Text: The effortless, automatic ability to read words in connected text. Vocabulary: The ability to understand (receptive) and use (expressive) words to acquire and convey meaning. Comprehension: The complex cognitive process involving the intentional interaction between reader and text to convey meaning. (Big Ideas, 2007)English Language LearnersEnglish Language Learners (ELL) are the fasted growing group of students in our public school systems. In some systems, their numbers have more than doubled during the past decade. In order for these students to participate meaningfully in the academic activities required to meet standards and make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), educators must facilitate the development of language skills beyond those of social fluency (Jarrett, 2002). The U.S. Department of Education defines ELLS as national-origin-minority students who are limited-English-proficient. The ELL term is often preferred over Limited-English-Proficient (LEP) as it highlights accomplishments rather than deficits, (Francis, Rivera, Leaux, Kieffer, Rivera, (2006, p. 3). Young ELL learners are tasked with acquiring a second language while simultaneously developing a first language (Fancis, et al., 2006, p. 6). Academic language is a very important for academic success, however, many ELL students are lacking in this area even when socially conversationally competent. ELL students frequently struggle in the area of Vocabulary, which limits their ability to learn about and discuss academic topics. Comprehension is another area of difficulty, particularly in the ability to make inferences, comprehending and analyzing text. Low vocabulary levels hinder the ability to develop adequate reading comprehension and writing skills (Francis, et al., 2006, p. 14). Recommended Interventions for ELL studentsExplicit, early, and intensive phonological awareness and phonics to build decoding skills.ELL students demonstrating difficulty in the acquisition of these abilities require Tier 2-3 interventions and delaying intervention until the students gain proficiency in English is discouragedIncrease instruction and opportunities to develop sophisticated vocabulary knowledge. An area that remains neglected in most classroomsExplicit teaching of individual words as well as teaching word-learning strategiesStrategies Rosetta Stone Greek

Strategy of Using Interactive Multimedia in Learning English

Interactive multimedia can be extremely effective when it comes to learning Cheap Rosetta Stone

GOP bends its own new House rules

Just hours after taking control of the House, Republicans passed a sweeping Rosetta Stone V3
set of rules promising transparency and reform. But the new majority is already showing these promises aren’t exactly set in stone. After calling for bills to go through a regular committee process, the bill that would repeal the health care law will not go through a single committee. Despite promising a more open amendment process for bills, amendments for the health care repeal will be all but shut down. After calling for a strict committee attendance list to be posted online, Republicans backpedaled and ditched that from the rules. They promised constitutional citations for every bill but have yet to add that language to early bills. (See: GOP backpedals on committee attendance rule)Republicans say there are subtle reasons for these moves and that they certainly will follow their own rules throughout the 112th Congress. But the hedging on some promises shows just how hard it will be to always match the sharp rhetoric of the campaign with the ugly and complex work of running the House. (See: The era of Speaker Boehner begins) The promise of full debate in committees, for example, was inspired by Republican complaints that Rosetta Stone Arabic Software
Democrats abused their power in bypassing regular debate. Republicans such as Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Rules Chairman David Dreier of California all have complained that Democrats in the last Congress didn’t bring a single bill under a process called the open rule a mechanism that allows for nearly unlimited amendments and debate. None of the bills that will be brought to the floor this week will be brought under open rules. When asked directly whether he would bring the repeal bill to the floor under an open rule, Cantor dodged the question. (See: House to vote on health repeal next week) The repeal bill is going to be a very straightforward document, Cantor said this week. It is going to reflect what I think most people inside the Beltway and outside the Beltway understand about the health care bill that was passed. It is a job-killing health care bill that spends money we don’t have, and we need to repeal it and replace it with the kind of health care that most Americans expect. Regarding the failure to put the constitutional citation into bills, Republicans say that typically will come when a bill hits the floor. The three bills that Republicans plan to introduce this week one to cut the congressional budget, one to repeal the health care bill and another to instruct House committees to present new health care legislation were posted on the Rules Committee website with plenty of time Rosetta Stone Chinsese Software
for review, but none had the constitutional citation for similar review. Aides vowed the citations would be available when the bills hit the floor. How detailed the citations will be remains to be seen, aides on both sides of the aisle say. (See: GOP won't count cost of repeal)
