Oil price ending 2011 near $100 a barrel

NEW YORK (AP) — The price of oil soared in 2011 and will finish about 19 percent higher, on average, after a volatile year dominated by concerns about global supplies. And high oil and gasoline prices are expected to continue weighing on the economy as it struggles to grow in 2012."It's like leaving the parking brake on while you're trying to drive the economy forward," said Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research.Benchmark crude gave up 82 cents to finish at $98.83 per barrel on Friday, the final trading day of the year.Overall in 2011, crude prices averaged $95.09 per barrel in New York. That's up from $79.64 in 2010 and $62.11 in 2009. The Energy Department expects prices to rise further in 2012 to an average of $98 per barrel. After starting the year at $91.38 per barrel, oil prices jumped in February as an anti-government rebellion began in Libya. International oil companies pulled employees from the country as the fighting escalated, and oil production was essentially halted for several months.About 1.5 million barrels of daily oil exports were cut off during the Libyan uprising. UGG Argyle Knit Boots That's less than 2 percent of what the world uses, but with demand rising to 88 million barrels per day, every last drop mattered. Oil prices jumped 25 percent from the middle of February to the first week in March. The price of benchmark West Texas crude rose as high as $113.93 a barrel in April, then dropped to $75.67 by October.Prices are again flirting with $100 per barrel following threats from Iran to close key shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf. Iran, which has been accused of trying to build a nuclear weapon, has been threatening to shut down the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. and other countries target the country with new sanctions. The waterway is a key route in and out of the Persian Gulf, used by tankers carrying one-sixth of the world's oil exports. As oil prices rose this year, the global economy cut back on fuel consumption. A private survey released Friday showed that Chinese manufacturing activity slowed in December for a second month due to weak global demand amid U.S. and European economic woes.In the U.S., gasoline demand dropped by 2.5 percent overall in 2011, according to the Energy Department. Pump prices are down 72 cents per gallon since peaking in May near $4 per gallon. On Friday the national average for a gallon of regular was $3.269 (86 cents a liter), according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. Analysts expect the average pump to rise to $4 a gallon again by spring. In other energy trading Friday, heating oil rose 1.75 cents to finish at $2.935 per gallon, and gasoline futures rose by less than a penny to end at $2.6863 per gallon. Natural gas futures fell by 3.8 cents to finish at $2.989 per 1,000 cubic feet.Brent crude, which is used to price foreign oil that's imported by U.S. refineries, fell 63 cents to end the year at $107.38 per barrel in London.

Parental Smoking Causes Vascular Damage In Young Children

Another trend of proof against cigarette smoking use was launched this week, with proof from a Nederlander research team displaying mom and dad cigarette smoking causing general harm in kids.Published in Pediatric medicine, 5 years ago, the experts started collecting information from 259 kids at the age of four weeks, collecting information about their mom and dad cigarette smoking routines and understanding their aerobic wellness until the age of 5. Specifically, they looked at the kids carotid artery intima-media width (CIMT) and arterial wall distensibility, using ultrasonography to take the dimensions. The proof is fairly definite and shows that kids whose moms used during having a baby had on average carotid veins displaying 15% more firmness, as well as arterial thickening of 19 microns, compared with their light up free colleagues. Where both moms and men used during the having a baby the firmness increased to 21% and thickening to 28 microns. The experts state that they were incapable to find an effect from men cigarette smoking during having a baby or from moms that started cigarette smoking following childbirth, displaying that the major harm is from the mom cigarette smoking while having the child.Uiterwaal, an affiliate lecturer of scientific epidemiology at the Julius Middle for Health Sciences and Primary Care at the Higher education Medical Middle Utrecht, Holland, said: "...With our results, we think that cigarette smoking in having a baby does play an impartial role, although we know that visibility of kids to light up is destructive in many areas." Although of course there are thousands of other substances we are revealed to daily, from car toxins, braking system pad particles, to household cleaning substances, shows and glues, that are just as competitive and harmful as cigarettes.Nonetheless Uiterwaal's study, as Tanski and Wilson create : "... Provides one more piece of proof for the significance of cigarettes, in particular, among family members with kids and those planning to have kids." Extremism will fade away if we delink from war on terror: Imran

KARACHI: If the fiasco of May 2, followed by the memogate scandal, had occurred while he was in power, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan says he would have resigned without batting an eyelid rather than dragging the issue further. “I wouldn’t have let it happen,” he says.A confident Imran Khan was extolling the virtues of strong leadership and comparing himself to the present rulers who he sees as weak and compromised. A day after holding a successful rally in Karachi, a relaxed Khan met a group of senior journalists from the Jang Group and Geo on Monday at an informal gathering. Dressed in a grey shalwar kameez with a black waistcoat, he answered a barrage of questions from every direction. From his speech at the Karachi rally, his blueprint for the future, his dream team, relations with India to the ongoing wave of terrorism and extremism in the country, he faced every question with ease. While speaking, he was at once candid over some issues and non-committal on others. Speaking about memogate, Khan said that resigning is mistakenly considered a cowardly act by politicians in Pakistan, who refrain from doing so as they have too much to lose. Giving an example, he said that he resigned twice as captain in his cricketing career, when his selection of the team was rejected by the administration. “It shows your strength and resolve towards an issue for a higher purpose,” he says, adding that it is a symbol of a strong leadership. Talking about his concept of an Islamic welfare state and whether Pakistan can actually become what he wants it to be, he says with a smile that the term ‘Islamic state’ instantly evokes a reaction that the foundation of such a state might be radical and extreme. UGG Classic Short “My idea of a welfare state is one which is based on the outlines of what Allama Iqbal wanted. That is, a spiritual democracy. A society which is humane and where liberal thought can flourish,” he says. He points to the Scandinavian countries, such as Sweden and Norway, which he believes are closest to his ideals. He adds that these countries were not only humane and had a remarkable social security system but also had high growth rates and low crime. People paid high taxes, he said, because they believed that society would give them something back in return. This could also be the case in Pakistan, his experience shows, where people give generously to causes they believe in but not to the government which they do not trust. Imran believes that he can inspire the people and make them pay taxes because of their trust in the system he would introduce. His concept of a welfare state is easier to achieve, said Khan, by taking a broader view of what Islam has to offer in terms of the economy etc and include it in governmental policies. At the same time, the state must take responsibility to reverse the decline of four sectors: education, unemployment, health and justice. He says that he believes it is necessary to impose an emergency in certain key sectors, beginning with education, to put Pakistan back on its feet. The courts too need to be overhauled from below. “The judiciary has been subservient to the state for a very long time now. It can’t go on like this,” he says, and adds that the creation of “informal courts” at the local level can take care of routine matters and take the pressure off the higher judiciary which is now independent. The issues that we are facing today have been a result of complacency. “I can lay the foundations to resolve these issues within 90 days,” he claims.Imran insists that his interpretation of Islam is liberal despite the fact that his critics have accused him of being pro-Taliban and close to right wing elements. The question is relevant specially given that rampant radicalisation of society where killing in the name of religion is justified, even among those forces he sees as allies. Answering this charge, Khan retorts it is impossible to be a secular-minded politician in Pakistan. “You can either be on one side or the other. The reality is that a person who speaks for secularism is considered irreligious,” he says quietly. In his political career, there have been times where he has been accused of being a radical himself after some of his statements in the press were considered to be ‘soft on the extremists.’ “I have been bracketed many a times as a radical and that’s because I said I prefer talking to the extremists rather than waging a war (against them),” he says vehemently. The point, he insists, is to speak to the tribal elders and take them into confidence rather than make an enemy out of them. He insists that the US-led war in Afghanistan and drone attacks have radicalised a large section of the population of Fata which sees the US-led war in Afghanistan as a war against Islam. As a result, many suicide bombers have been created who see themselves fighting a jihad for Islam. He insists that the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan will ease that pressure and make it much easier for Pakistan to contain terrorism and extremism.”If Pakistan chooses to delink itself from the war on terror, the radicalisation and polarisation within society will eventually fade away,” he says, adding that the momentary halt in suicide bombings does not mean that we have won the war. Just one single operation in any one of the troubled areas will make extremists pour out from all corners, he states.Taking a pause, he adds cautiously that the extremist element persist because the establishment has patronised them for a long time. When asked whether it still supports such elements, he gives a non-committal answer: “We are in a peculiar situation and cannot afford to have extremists in our country.” He also says that the US elections will force Americans to take a much harder line against Pakistan and that we must prepare for the worst and learn to stand on our own feet. With the euphoria of the successful Karachi rally still fresh, Imran Khan is asked why his speech to the massive crowd was not “Karachi-specific,” at all. The main issues plaguing the city — for instance, target killings, rampant extortion, the rise of the drug and land mafia —- were not discussed at all. What does Imran say to that? Taking a deep sigh, Khan replies that he did discuss the need for the de-politicisation of the police which is the root cause of all these issues. However, he seems uncomfortable when asked whether his differences with the MQM have been resolved. “The MQM is not an enemy at all. They hold 18 seats in the assembly and we have to first take on the bigger fish,” he trails off.He was asked about another important point of his speech at the rally in Karach; the apology that Khan sought from the people of Balochistan for the “issues that they are facing.” Is apologising enough after what the people, from all communities in the province, go through on a daily basis? And can development be a substitute for real autonomy and an equitable sharing of resources? Khan says he is not looking for a safe way out, “as apologising is a step in the right direction so we can begin talks with the people.” He points to the example of West Germany, which focused all development activities on the East after reunification. Repeating what has been said before, he said that once the development projects in the province start most of the issues of the people will vanish. On that, Jahangir Tareen, who had been sitting silently beside Khan, added that, “people within the province say that the dams and bridges are being made for the contractors and outsiders and not for the people of the province, which is true to a large extent.”Imran Khan was also asked about his position on a separate province for the Seraiki-speaking people of the Punjab, from where many of his party’s most recent high profile entrants hail. Khan says that a lack of autonomy within provinces has exacerbated the need for new provinces and that, although he is all for the creation of smaller units, he is against the creation of provinces on an ethnic and linguistic basis and the Seraiki issue needs a lot of further debate. On the issue of Kashmir and relations with India, Khan says that Kashmir cannot be kept on the back-burner while talks on trade and other issues continue. “If the agencies on both sides stop meddling in each other’s countries, a lot can be achieved through dialogue as it is high time that relations with India go a notch higher.”Asked whether he knows his main weaknesses and strengths, Khan replies that introspection goes on throughout life and he knows what he is doing. It is best to learn from past mistakes and move ahead.Asked about his team and whether the new entrants in the PTI are just leftovers from the Musharraf era, he points to Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Javed Hashmi as not fitting into that category. “I am an expert in team selection. And so far my team has not been completed as yet. The day it will, we will sweep the elections,” he says confidently. He is adamant that he will only take power if he can do so on his own terms. If he feels that he is not in a position to follow his agenda he would prefer to sit in the opposition, rather than rule on the basis of compromises. From not being taken seriously to being called a confused politician, Imran Khan has come a long way, though there is speculation about the help he is receiving now to reach the top. Rubbishing the speculation, he says, “I’m stubborn. And will fight till the last ball.”

Scientists discover how water makes chili peppers hotter

Biting into a hot soup may depart you getting for a cup of water, but that same spiciness actually leaves the spice up dry when water operates shorter, new studies suggest. Russia's presidential elections: will Vladimir Putin win?

When Vladimir Putin announced in September that he would run for president in next year’s election, no one doubted he would return to the position he held between 2000 and 2008. The dominant figure in Russian politics for more than a decade, he had enjoyed high approval ratings as both president and prime minister. But the poor showing of United Russia in the recent State Duma elections and subsequent street protests seem to have thrown a spanner in the works. “People are demanding more respect from the authorities,” says Andrei Ryabov of the Carnegie Centre in Moscow. Aside from United Russia, there are six nationally registered political parties, but there are no obviously strong presidential candidates in any of them. While covering a diverse set of political viewpoints, from nationalist to liberal, none has widespread appeal among the voters. The Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) is the most credible opposition, with a membership of more than 180,000. Its candidate has been second in every presidential election since the fall of the USSR, with the party leader Gennady Zyuganov losing the first-round vote to then-President Boris Yeltsin in 1996 by a margin of just 3pc. Though the CPRF has attracted high-profile candidates opposed to the ruling regime, they have generally lacked ideological credentials. It has also failed to modernise: unlike the Communist Party of the Soviet Union after 1956, it officially celebrates Stalin’s rule.
Mr Zyuganov, 67, has headed the party since 1993, but now relies mainly on protest votes for his popularity. Announcing his intention to run for president earlier this year, he said: “A gang of folks who cannot do anything in life apart from dollars, profits and mumbling, has humiliated the country.” Just Russia, a party widely rumoured to have been set up by the Kremlin in 2006 precisely to take votes from the Communists, also appeals to a left-leaning electorate with promises of a new socialism of the 21st century. Canada Goose ChilliwackLeader Sergei Mironov was speaker of the upper house of the Russian parliament from 2001 to 2011. Previously a staunch Putin supporter, he also announced his intention to run for president earlier this month. Another long-standing political heavyweight is Vladimir Zhirinovsky, head of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) since its inception in 1991. While the party has positioned
itself as anti-government with several nationalist slogans, it has voted in favour of practically every major government initiative. The remaining parties – liberal-leaning Yabloko, Right Cause and Patriots of Russia – only have single-figure approval ratings so could not be credible competition, although Yabloko will field a candidate in the shape of the economist and intellectual Grigory Yavlinsky. “A drop in oil prices could be enough to turn these political leaders into genuine opposition [candidates],” says Mr Ryabov. “However you feel about Zyuganov, Zhirinovsky and Mironov – they’re professional politicians. They understand how society feels and know how to react. Look at Eastern Europe in the late Eighties: previously loyal political parties in East Germany and Poland split with the government, and some of them came to power.” Not everyone is waiting for the parties to modernise. Mikhail Prokhorov – Russia’s billionaire owner of the New Jersey Nets – recently announced his desire to run for the country’s top office. For most of the past decade, big money had stayed out of Russian politics. Maybe too many dashes. But this year Mr Prokhorov joined the Right Cause political party – designed to appeal to a liberal-leaning, urban electorate – and announced his intention to take Mr Putin’s job as prime minister. Then he was voted out of the party after having spent millions of his own dollars on billboards and promotions across the country. Mr Prokhorov’s announcement that he would be running as an independent caused a stir in the media – especially after Mr Prokhorov promised to release the jailed oil baron Mikhail Khodorkovsky if he was elected. Another widely-circulated name is the lawyer-turned-anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny, described as “the only electable Russian” by the opposition journalist Yulia Latynina. Mr Navalny rose to fame after launching a popular website exposing corruption in state organisations and companies. One of his strategies was to buy a small number of stocks in state companies and use Russian investor protection laws to obtain information. However, Mr Navalny shocked both Western and Russian observers when he attended a Russian nationalist march earlier this year. He has denied any intention to run for president, and the polls – conducted in November by the Levada Centre – show that only around 1pc of Russians trust him. While few doubt that Mr Putin will win the top job in the end, his relationship with the newly elected parliament and society is anything from certain. United Russia recently surrendered half of the parliamentary committee chairmanships, which it had controlled for four years, to opposition parties following the election results. “If Putin doesn’t win in the first round of elections and has to face someone in a run-off, this will be a major signal from society that things need to change,” says Dmitry Babich, a political analyst at RIA Novosti. “But I’m sure he’ll win in the second round. There’s not a single figure to unite the opposition like in 1991; there’s not even a few single figures who could agree between themselves.”

"They change women, considering they can separate the people and discourage them this way."What occurred to the young lady who was removed and ripped was huge savagery. He declined that the army had given orders placed to crystal remove the block. But other generals and their experts have ruined the pro-democracy protesters, sometimes in incredible conditions."What is your sensation when you see The red sea and its historical past get rid of in entrance of you?" on common Abdel Moneim Kato, an army advisor, informed the day-to-day al-Shorouk, mentioning a traditional store developing set alight during situations - the Company of The red sea. Physicists close in on elusive subatomic particle – comcast.net

Physicists are closing in on an elusive subatomic particle that, if found, would confirm a long-held understanding about why matter has mass and how the universe’s fundamental building blocks behave.

Few people outside physics can fully comprehend the search for the Higgs boson, which was first hypothesized 40 years ago. But proving that the “God particle” actually exists would be “a vindication of the equations we’ve been using all these years,” said one Nobel laureate. UGG Boots Australia

Scientists announced Tuesday that they had found hints but no definitive proof of the particle that is believed to be a basic component of the universe. They hope to determine whether it exists by next year.

It’s hard to find, not because it is especially tiny, but because it is hard to create, said physicist Howard Gordon of the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York. He works with the ATLAS experiment, one of two independent teams looking for the Higgs boson at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva.

CERN runs the Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border, a 17-mile (27-kilometer) tunnel where high-energy beams of protons are sent crashing into each other at incredible speeds.

A fraction of those collisions could produce the Higgs particle, assuming it exists.

Researchers said Tuesday that they had defined a range of likely masses for the Higgs.

CERN’s director-general, Rolf Heuer, said “the window for the Higgs mass gets smaller and smaller” as scientists learn more.

“But be careful — it’s intriguing hints,” he said. “We have not found it yet. We have not excluded it yet.”

Tuesday’s revelations were highly anticipated by thousands of researchers, but the ideas behind the Higgs boson date back to the 1960s.

British physicist Peter Higgs and others theorized its existence to explain why the fundamental particles in matter have mass. Those particles, such as electrons, are the building blocks of the universe. Mass is a trait that combines with gravity to give an object weight. UGG Classic Short

Frank Wilczek, a Nobel laureate and physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said finding the Higgs boson would tie up a loose end of the standard model of physics, which requires that a Higgs-like particle exist.

“Since the equations have worked so brilliantly now for decades, it’s really nice to dot the i’s and cross the t’s,” Wilczek said.

In addition, if the mass of the Higgs is within a certain range, that would support some other theories that go beyond the standard model, he said.

Those theories predict the existence of other yet-to-be-found particles, meaning the Large Hadron Collider “will have another wave of brilliant discoveries in the future,” Wilczek said.

The mass range reported Tuesday is “perfect” to meet that requirement, he said.

“Because it fits together so beautifully with everything else we know … I’m certainly inclined to believe it,” he said. He called Tuesday’s presentations “awesome … just beautiful work.”

The lead physicist for the team running the separate CMS experiment outlined findings similar to those of the ATLAS team. The collaborations for the ATLAS and CMS experiments each involve about 3,000 scientists and engineers.

TIME's special report on paying for college.

But others contend the opposite — that FAMU, starting at the end of the civil rights movement in the 1970s, has received less scrutiny from the state because politicians and education officials fear accusations of racism. In 2007, when FAMU's finances were in disarray and the school temporarily lost its accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Steve Uhlfelder, a former chair of Florida's university regents and the recipient of a special FAMU award for service to the school, conceded that "we didn't look at the same way we did other universities. UGG Boots We were very sensitive to...past discrimination the criticism we received if we came down on them too hard." Other regents voiced the same concern. In 2004, James Corbin, then chairman of FAMU's board of trustees, had made a similar point: "We were not held, in my opinion, to the same kind of rigorous standards as the other universities."

A haven in the middle of Sydney

The Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney is one of the few in the CBD where you can lie by the pool - outside.Saturday morning, newspaper in hand, coffee by my side, I caught some sunshine and a relaxing swim.Never mind the coffee was $7.50 - that's the punishment for staying at luxury hotels. Our room was a corner one with an amazing view over Circular Quay, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Opera House.Later on a seedy Saturday night it was a great place to escape to - and hide in - away from the real world. We'd been to a free concert in the Domain as part of the Sydney Festival. UGG Boots Outlet And while you can only applaud offering free entertainment in the city - especially across so many different genres - the crowd at the event we went to wasn't quite as peaceful as you'd have hoped. We opened a bottle of wine and watched a movie on TV - bliss. We could have stopped off in The Bar downstairs where live jazz with well known international and Australian artists is played from Wednesday to Saturday nights. We'd met friends there earlier in the night and had a pleasant round of cocktails and the evening before had shared a nightcap there after the theatre. At night it's a place where locals and visitors relax, and during the day The Bar transforms into a meeting place. It's where I caught up with the hotel's Spa Manager Lucy Kennington for a cup of tea. Many guests make the most of the hotel's spa and gym facilities, even going to the fitness centre in the middle of the night for a run on the treadmill to deal with jetlag, she says. They're also available to the public and have become popular with people working in the city. The gym has a personal trainer on call.Kennington describes the spa as a retreat within the city. The spa uses Sodashi products from Western Australia as well as Elemis's professional spa and anti-ageing skincare range. UGG Kensington Boots Its signature treatment, the Sodashi Crystalus Massage, uses a blend of stones known as ancient Australian healing stones and crystals. The Sodashi Tiger Iron Massage stones contain layers of Tiger Eye, Jasper and Hermatite.Kennington says Sodashi designed this treatment exclusively for this spa, and it is "very earthy and very relaxing". And having had one of them, I'd have to agree. The spa has an international team of therapists with a wide range of language skills and its clientele is mixed, from couples to businessmen and women to hen's groups. It also offers treatments to counteract jet lag. While hotels can never be perfect and I did hear a couple of complaints about the lifts being a bit slow, and the receptionists not as polite as they could be, overall I was impressed by the service. At one stage, the waiter was even polite when he thought I hadn't paid the bill!Kable's restaurant - a fine dining eatery at night and for lunch - is frequented by many hotel guests, some eating alone with a book or newspaper. It's the sort of place where you can do that - if you're in a strange city alone especially on business it's good to know you won't be harassed if you just want to have a nice meal in private. Classic Short Ugg Boots The food was superb with a degustation or a la carte menu to choose from. Its dishes include: Soft-cured ocean trout, sour cream, baby radish and fennel salad; Chateaubriand Rangers Valley 300-day grain fed Black Angus beef, chateau potatoes, king brown mushrooms, Bearnaise and red wine sauce and West Australian lobster thermidor, cherry truss tomato, and watercress salad. In the morning, breakfast is served there - from fruit and Bircher muesli to freshly cooked pastries and bacon and eggs - it was pretty magnificent.

Yours gracefully

The Connaught Hotel in Mayfair counts among its legion of fans the late style icons Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. And then there's me. I arrive at the end of a European jaunt, trundling my enormous, dusty bags behind me because the hotel's a way from the nearest Tube station and what's a girl to do but walk? The doormen, I think, don't see many people trundling. They are usually the ones doing the trundle, behind guests, from taxi or chauffeur-driven car parked at the door. But the Connaught doormen are of that brilliantly British don't-raise-an-eyebrow school. I enter quiet, elegant Carlos Place, where the hotel's main entrance is, and they act like it's nothing. Even before it's clear I'm a guest they treat me as if I am. Once I positively identify myself as someone checking in, they rush to relieve me of my load.Once inside, like Cary and Grace, I am immediately a fan.I'm faced with the prettiest staircase I have ever seen. Ugg Bailey Button 5803 Oak banisters polished to mirror sheen, wood panelling with gold-leaf details, classical paintings and stairs covered in a cherry-red striped carpet lead up towards a splendid skylight. The concierge, tucked in a wood-panel booth underneath, faces a reception desk that has the air of how it would have been in Cary Grant's time, though computers and other accoutrements of progress are used discreetly out of sight.Reception treats me as if I am, indeed, a movie star. The staff are respectful, cheery and concerned but never obsequious: Britain at its best. And when they announce the news every traveller wants to hear - I have been granted an upgrade - the desk clerk beams as if he's handing me a BAFTA.He leads me up to my room - using the lift but I'll be sweeping down those stairs later, mark my words - and I can't help but ask if anyone more famous than Cary and Grace has stayed of late. He begins with the gambit employed by every five-star hotel employee of which I have ever asked this question: "Well, don't say I told you ..." then reveals Sean Connery loves the place and I've just missed AC/DC.Cary, Grace, 007, Angus and me. That's just the kind of place the Connaught is. Hardly rock'n'roll but then AC/DC are hardly throwing TV sets out windows these days. No, the Connaught is the sort of supremely comfortable, exquisitely stylish, impeccably mannered and attentively serviced joint that people who have earned the right to expect such things, such as AC/DC, gravitate towards. It all makes perfect sense to me, especially when my escort opens the door to my suite, which is the London apartment of my dreams.I'm in a Connaught suite that features, among other things, an antique Chinese lacquered liquor cabinet full of gleaming crystal glasses and full-size bottles of top-shelf fare, including Bombay Sapphire gin.A butler comes by and explains everything for me - light switches, TV controls, how to get the butler back - and even lays out a pair of slippers right by me.The walls are covered in gold-leaf details. The furnishings are plush and the decor - the lamps, urns, vases of flowers, occasional tables and carpeting - are beautifully thought-out and undeniably expensive.I have a fireplace and a big, openable window looking on to Carlos Place.Actually, I have two big openable windows. When I eventually make it through to the equally divine bedroom, I find the other one. UGG Ultra Short Boots The room also has a supreme restfulness and the kind of wardrobe space to make Imelda Marcos weep. Gold leaf and ornamentation give way to pale caramel walls and little works of art that make it sweet and cosy without being cloying.Downstairs, there is a world of culinary delight. Since the hotel's £70 million renovation was completed in 2008, the restaurant that was once run by Gordon Ramsay is now the domain of the Michelin-starred Helene Darroze, who oversees all culinary aspects of Connaught service. The Connaught Bar gets busy with after-workers and the cognac bar, The Coburg Bar, has a glamorous late-night vibe to it. A lovely Aman spa completes the Connaught's five-star standard of full service. It's hard to leave but all good things and all that. So I depart, starting my trundle off for the Tube. The doormen have lost a bit of their poker face with me - I've been asking them for directions and recommendations, so we're familiar. This time, they ask if I am sure I don't want a taxi. It's a way to the Tube, they tell me. I know, I say, then set off in the wrong direction. The doormen call me back, their don't-raise-an-eyebrow veneer fully disintegrating now."You've got our number if you get lost?" one says. "We will come and get you."With service like that I feel as special as Grace Kelly.

Diversionary tactics on the long ride north

We plan to drive from Sydney to the Gold Coast in mid-December with our two children. Can you suggest some good stopping points along the way on our two-day trip, with activities for both adults and children? Also, do you have any recommendations for family accommodation about half to two-thirds of the trip in each direction? Argyle Knit UGG Boots

- K. Walker, Sydney.

The Pacific Highway is about speed, not fun. Although it passes close to some glorious national parks and offers some lively diversions such as Bucketts Way and the road along the beach between Port Macquarie and Crescent Head, you won't have time to stop and enjoy them. However, the journey can be made bearable.Whenever I've done this trip with my children, I start by trying to rack up some serious kilometres. Because attractions are sparse on the F3, our first stop north of Sydney is Heatherbrae's Pies, on the first roundabout after you cross the Hexham Bridge, about 2 hours from Sydney. I cannot speak for the meat items but the apple concoctions are truly scrumptious.Next stop is Bulahdelah, just under an hour away, where you can have a coffee and a pleasant stroll by the river. Wauchope involves a slight diversion but the children can let off some steam at Timbertown; the town itself is well worth a stroll.A final push in the afternoon will get you to Coffs Harbour, where there's a great choice of family-friendly accommodation. The Novotel Pacific Bay Resort Argyle Knit UGG Boots is a prime choice. Since you've broken the back of your journey, the second leg can be more relaxed. It's definitely worth stopping at Grafton and driving along Fitzroy Street to sample the architectural delights of this gracious and languid town.Because time is probably on your side, turn off the Pacific Highway at Bangalow and drive through Byron Bay for a splash in the surf. Byron Beach Cafe, right on Clarke's beach, will enhance the holiday mood. From Byron Bay, it's a 60-minute or so drive to the Gold Coast. Of course, this is a busy time of year, so remember to take it easy and be safe.

The faux and the fabulous

SOMETHING is amiss at Domaine de Rochevilaine, a sprawling manor house-turned-hotel perched on a rock face in southern Brittany. First clue: why would a mediaeval manor be built on the edge of the sea, exposed to invasion and storms? And what to make of the jumble of carved granite crosses, ancient Celtic urns, wells and religious statues from various epochs in the garden? Finally, a startling anachronism - the remains of a wartime bunker poking out of the grass.Yes, the Domaine is a clever mediaeval fraud, built entirely after World War II by an eccentric industrialist by the name of Henri Dresch. That's not to say that Dresch's outstanding collection is fake, however. Everything is genuine. The 14th- and 15th-century mediaeval manors on the property were removed from outlying villages and rebuilt on the site, stone by stone. The mediaeval artefacts were salvaged from local churches ravaged by fire, or dug up from the soil. The site is unique, to say the least. Classic Short Ugg Boots The whole marvellous edifice is set among a garden of hortensias, foxgloves and roses flowering among grapevines, palms and even an Australian tree fern. Then there are the sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and jagged black granite rocks that bookend sandy coves. The Domaine de Rochevilaine is now part of the Relais & Chateaux hotel group and is well known in the region for its spa and restaurant, which has a Michelin star.Well-heeled Parisians make up the majority of the clientele, along with a handful of Brits and Germans. Thanks to Brittany's relative isolation from the rest of the country until the past century, its Celtic culture has been strongly preserved. Granite houses with blue windows and flower boxes form charming villages, crepes and cider are a local specialty and the coastline is moody and picturesque. Our room at the hotel is no less than the Admiral suite, from which you can see the sun rise and set. The winding staircase to the room, which is itself curved and fitted out with maritime furniture, only reinforces the impression of being in a lighthouse. There's plenty to do at the hotel. The main attraction is the award-winning spa, which has hot-stone massage treatment and a large indoor heated pool, hammam, spa and sauna. There is also an outdoor heated saltwater pool for sunbathing and, for the hardy, stone steps leading to an ocean bath.Dinner at Domaine de Rochevilaine is an event, rather like on the elegant cruise liners of old. Guests dress and gather in the bar, which is in the style of an English club lounge with leather sofas, bookcases and trolleys of exotic liquors. A small plate of savoury nibbles is served with pre-dinner drinks, during which guests look at the menu, based heavily on local seafood, and place their order before moving to the restaurant. The restaurant has bay windows with sweeping views of the Atlantic, the site of numerous naval battles with the English, including the Battle of the Cardinals in 1759.Our meal included oysters so fresh they retract with the slightest nudge from a knife blade; the famous lobster from Brittany, grilled with butter and served with fresh tagliatelle and matched with a white wine from the Loire. UGG Ultra Short The service is outstanding - the lobster meat is removed from the shell and arranged on the plate at the table, with a sauce in a silver jug. The cheeses are brought to the table with great ceremony and desserts are presented exquisitely. The coffee comes accompanied by a plate of tiny sweets, just to round off the meal in style.Breakfast the next day at Domaine de Rochevilaine is also an event. The hotel's owner decided to do away with the ubiquitous breakfast buffet a few years ago and embarked on the much more labour-intensive practice of serving guests a breakfast menu in their room. We are given a choice of four menus. At our nominated time, two staff arrive bearing heavy trays. They set the table with linen, Villeroy & Boch china and silver cutlery and proceed to lay down an array of tiny plates with fresh crepes, strawberries, egg cream, quince jam, caramel, fruit compote, brioches, baguettes, sliced ham, a runny poached egg in tomato jelly and soft curd cheese. It's hard to leave Domaine de Rochevilaine after just one night - two would be perfect, though some of its faithful clientele book in for more than a week. It's an atmospheric place that imprints on the memory like the Manderley of Daphne du Maurier's novel Rebecca.

Quit fruits to lose those pounds

Quit vegetables and fruits and exercising – that`s the new mantra for losing weight, according to a nutritionist.Zoe Harcombe has said that everything that people thought was good to stay healthy - fewer calories and more exercise - only packs on the flab."It`s a myth. It`s the carbs that pile on the pounds," The New York Post quoted Harcombe as writing in her book `The Obesity Epidemic: What Caused It? How Can We Stop It?`She said Americans must go back to older dietary rules calling for red meat, fish, eggs, cream and butter, all virtually carbohydrate free."You`ve got to go back to sticking a pork chop on the grill," she said.

Here are a few myths she busted in her book: UGG Ultra Short

1. Veggies and fruit are more nutritious than any other food: Greens are good only if they are slathered in butter in order to deliver the fat-soluble vitamins they contain. Sugar in fruit gets stored as fat in the liver.2. Losing weight is about reducing calories: "If you cut 500 calories from a 2,000-calorie daily diet, you will lose weight at first."But the body will compensate and turn down its metabolism to reduce energy and use fewer calories.3. Starchy foods should be the main part of our diet: Pasta, bread and grains turn into sugar in the blood, which is unhealthy. It forces the body to release insulin, which stores fat, in order to get the glucose levels back to normal.4. We should exercise to combat obesity: "It will only cause you to get hungry, and your body will crave carbohydrates, which causes weight gain."5. Fat is a definite no-no: "Real fat from natural foods is good. Eat only what nature grows." "Stop grazing and snacking. Go back to eating three good meals a day and manage your carbs if you want to lose weight," Harcombe said.

Tai Chi improves arthritis pain

Participants who were recruited in the largest study of the Arthritis Foundation`s Tai Chi programme, have shown improvement in pain, fatigue, stiffness and sense of well-being.Their ability to reach while maintaining balance also improved, said Leigh Callahan, the study`s lead author, associate professor in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and a member of UNC`s Thurston Arthritis Research Center."Our study shows that there are significant benefits of the Tai Chi course for individuals with all types of arthritis, including fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis," Callahan said."We found this in both rural and urban settings across a southeastern state and a northeastern state."In the study, 354 participants were recruited from 20 sites in North Carolina and New Jersey. Ugg Boots Sale They were randomly assigned to two groups. The intervention group received the 8-week, twice-weekly Tai Chi course immediately while the other group was a delayed control group. All participants received baseline and 8-week follow-up evaluations, after which the control group also received the Tai Chi course. To be eligible for study, participants had to have any type of self-reported, doctor-diagnosed arthritis, be 18 years old or older and able to move independently without assistance. However, they did not have to be able to perform Tai Chi standing. They were eligible for the study if they could perform Tai Chi seated, Callahan said.Self-reports of pain, fatigue and stiffness and physical function performance measures were collected at baseline and at the eight-week evaluation. Bailey Button Ugg Boots Participants were asked questions about their ability to perform activities of daily living, their overall general health and psychosocial measures such as their perceived helplessness and self-efficacy.At the end of eight weeks the individuals who had received the intervention showed moderate improvements in pain, fatigue and stiffness. They also had an increased sense of well being, as measured by the psychosocial variables, and they had improved reach or balance, Callahan said. The results have been presented at the annual scientific meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in Atlanta.

Body contouring rare after weight loss surgery

Patients rarely have excess skin removed after weight loss surgery, although it can be a bother for people who`ve shed a lot of pounds, a new poll suggests.Plastic surgeons said patients either don`t know about this extra surgery, called body contouring, or simply can`t afford it.Yet it`s more than just a cosmetic procedure, said Dr. Jason Spector, who presented the findings at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) in Denver this week. "It is surgery that improves patients` quality of life," Spector, of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, told Reuters Health. The excess skin that is left after severe weight loss can get in the way of exercising, interfere with patients` ability to wear clothes properly and cause rashes and serious infections. Spector said weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, is "just the first step" for patients. "In order to complete the journey, patients really do need to undergo the appropriate post-bariatric body contouring. Even though that has a slightly cosmetic ring to it, it`s certainly something that we, as plastic surgeons, would consider reconstructive," he explained. Body contouring after weight loss surgery is akin to breast reconstruction after mastectomy, a procedure which is now mandated by law in New York State and paid for by insurance companies. To get a sense of how many patients were actually going on to have body contouring surgery, Spector and his team mailed a survey to 1,158 patients whose operations were done by two surgeons between 2003 and 2011. They received 284 responses. UGG Classic Mini 5854 Only a quarter of the patients said they discussed body contouring with their surgeon around the time of the operation, with about 12 percent actually undergoing the procedure. "This was strikingly low," Spector said. The most frequent reasons for not having body contouring were expense and lack of awareness of the procedure. Nearly 40 percent of the patients said they might have chosen differently if they had received more information. According to Healthcare Blue Book, a consumer guide to healthcare costs, body contouring comes with a price tag of about $13,000. The flabby excess skin can pose a very real danger, Spector said. He described a patient whose overhanging skin was caught underneath the electronically controlled seat of her car as she was adjusting it. "A large piece of skin was ripped off and caused a big open wound and subsequent infection. Up to that point, her insurance company had told her, `Sorry, you can`t have the surgery. You don`t need it.` So we`re not talking small bits here." Dr. Malcolm Z. Roth, from Albany Medical Center and the newly-elected president of the ASPS, welcomed the new findings. "It was painfully obvious to me as a plastic surgeon practicing in the community that this was an issue," he told Reuters Health. "It`s good to finally have some data." Roth added that patients need to consider that having weight loss surgery is not the end of their journey. "Patients need to realize it`s not just a slam dunk. When they lose the weight, at the end of the rainbow, there may not be a pot of gold. It may be that they have another rainbow to navigate to get to the pot of gold, and it may take several operations to take care of the excess skin on the abdomen, thighs, arms, breasts, face and neck. We would hope that bariatric surgeons would present this information to patients, but we also want patients to become educated, themselves."

Exercises for arthritis

Here are four types of exercises that can reduce pain, say experts.Experts claim that people with arthritis who exercise have less pain, more energy, improved sleep, and better day-to-day function. Still, they tend to avoid exercising. "People with arthritis avoid exercise for a number of reasons," explained Donna Everix of the Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals. "Some avoid it due to fear of pain or injury, and others avoid if for the same reason many people without arthritis do - not wanting to make a lifestyle change." Inactivity, in addition to arthritis related problems, can result in a variety of health risks, including Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In addition, decreased pain tolerance, weak muscles, stiff joints and poor balance common to many forms of arthritis can be made worse by inactivity.

Flexibility: Flexibility exercises help to maintain or improve the flexibility in affected joints and surrounding muscles. Benefits include better posture, reduced risk of injuries and improved function. When focusing on flexibility exercises, range of motion exercises should be performed five to 10 times on a daily basis while stretching exercises can be performed at least three days a week with each stretch being held for 30 seconds.

StrengtheningStrengthening exercises are designed to work muscles. Strong muscles improve function and help to reduce bone loss related to inactivity. For people with arthritis, one set of eight to 10 exercises for the major muscle groups of the body two to three times a week is recommended. However, older individuals may find that 10-15 repetitions with less resistance are more effective. The resistance or weight should challenge the muscles without increasing joint pain.

AerobicAerobic exercises include activities that use the large muscles of the body in a repetitive and rhythmic manner. Aerobic exercise improves heart, lung and muscle function. For people with arthritis, this type of exercise has benefits for weight control, mood, sleep and general health. Safe forms of aerobic exercise include walking, aerobic dance, aquatic exercise, bicycling or exercising on equipment such as stationary bikes, treadmills or elliptical trainers. Current recommendations for aerobic activity are 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week, preferably spread out over several days.

Body awarenessBody awareness exercises include activities to improve posture, balance, joint position sense, coordination and relaxation. Tai chi and yoga are examples of recreational exercises that incorporate elements of body awareness and can be a very useful part of an arthritis exercise plan.
